It has taken almost as long to check who one what on Sunday, as it did to lay the b****y trails in the first place! The trouble being the results were so close, that in the end triple checking had to be done. We had three separate categories. There were runners, cyclist(s) and walkers, so we actually have three winners.
Before coming to the detailed results, I hope that all who took part enjoyed the event, and feel it was worth all the effort they expended. As always with these Wayfaring activities, there are things that happen that were not foreseen.
I mean it's not my fault if the posties go on strike in October, and their letterboxes get sealed up with tape, that obscures the answers on the boxes to the questions I set in August! Also, how was I too know that the bus timetables were to be updated after I had set one of the walkers questions, so making the walkers answers right and mine wrong! And then the walkers got asked, "What was the opening gate?" Having discovered a gate at the entrance to Oswestry's castle at the right place on their map, they not unreasonably replied " Castle gate." In fact, the question was meant to ask, "What was the opening date?" which was the date the posh steps and memorial by the castle were opened. The spell check didn't of course pick up the difference between "gate" and "date" when I came to print the questions several weeks ago.
Having got the completed answers in, I must say I admire the initiative of a couple of walkers, who faced with the query " "Great......What?" to which the answer was "Great Crested Newts", came up with the optimistic suggestion of "Great Expectations!" In a moment of weakness, and because it doesn't affect the result, I've given those two the points for a correct answer. Also, a couple of the runners when asked "Who made the stile?" decided that "Doug Marston Sawmills " was correct, rather than "Dudmaston Sawmills." New glasses lads! Again, generosity was shown, as the result was unaffected.
Finally, I think we all heard of Mr Seymour's travails, and if asked I'm sure he will produce pictures of the jungle he actually ended up cycling in, complete with the sticky burrs I spent 5 minutes peeling off him when he finally returned to the hotel. Now I know where Velcro came from. I gather he actually spent more time carrying his bike rather than pedalling it. Anyway, the winners are,
